400 Hz is a type of frequency within AC electrical power, which is the standard for weapon systems, aerospace and aircraft industries across the world. Aircrafts can not use the 50Hz or 60Hz power coming from the utility supply when on the ground.
Airports, hangars and aircraft ships must have access to a Ground Power Unit ( GPU ) 400Hz frequency converter as this is not a standard power.
A 400hz frequency converter takes 50Hz or 60 Hz power directly from the utility and converts it to 400hz which is acceptable to aircraft and military power systems. The worldwide standard for aerospace and aviation is 400hz. Using 400hz in the airports all around the world is a global standard. The higher frequency means less material ( volume / mass ) for cables, transformers and generators and less power loss. The saving of weight allows to increase cargo capacity, to carry more passenger and helps to decrease fuel consumption.
Aircraft electrical power is generated by an Integrated Drive Generator (IDG) mounted on the engine gearbox.
IDG output:
• 115/200 V AC
• 3-phase
• 400 Hz (constant frequency)
The key requirement is that the aircraft electrical system must receive a constant 400 Hz, regardless of engine RPM changes. If aircraft used 50–60 Hz, the result would be:
• Larger motors
• Heavier transformers
• Bigger generators
• Increased wiring weight
• Higher overall aircraft weight
• Increased fuel consumption
In aviation, weight is everything.Using 400 Hz allows:
• Smaller transformers
• Smaller motors
• Smaller generators
• Lighter wiring
• Space and weight savings
• Reduced fuel burn
That’s why 400 Hz power is used for:
• Cabin lighting
• Galleys
• Air conditioning packs
• Hydraulic pumps
• Major aircraft systems
400 Hz is the best balance between the following:
• Weight reduction
• Efficiency
• Reliability
• EMI control
That’s why aircraft use 400 Hz AC power instead of 50/60 Hz.A Ground Power Unit (GPU) is ground support equipment (GSE) which provides clean power for both maintenance and engine usage starting the aircraft while they are parked in the hangar, or on the runaway. GPUs in aviation are crucial equipment, as they deliver specified power through the use of a solid state battery or diesel versions.
GPUs powered by diesel engines are known to be the most portable. They require fuel and engine maintenance, they are costly and cause noise / emissions. Also the efficiency of a Diesel GPU (Motor Generator Set) is not high at normal level of loads, therefore the operation costs are high.
On the other hand, electrical ground power units solid-state frequency converters are much quieter than diesel GPU units, creating less pollution. They are more eco-friendly and highly efficient (up to 94%) and a green choice.
EnSmart Power supplies 400 Hz AC GPUs, 28 VDC GPUs or combinations. A DC (Direct Current) GPU usually ranges from a 12 to 24V system, and is used for general aircraft, smaller jets and turboprop airplanes.
An AC (Alternating Current) GPU is more similar to the type of electricity that powers buildings and residence. The electrical system usually runs in the 400Hz range, and is more oriented towards larger aircrafts and airline planes. The system converts standard grid power (50 Hz or 60 Hz) into 400 Hz output, required by aircraft systems.

EnSmart Power frequency converters are used in NATO and US overseas bases. Equipments for these bases are selected through MIL standards (e.g., 400 Hz per MIL-STD-704) Mission type (fixed base vs deployable). EnSmart Power products meet these standards.
